Subject: [xcat-user] xCAT 2.0 support for AIX
Importance: High
Greetings,
The initial (alpha) xCAT 2.0 support for AIX is now available.
xCAT 2.0 documentation and software is available from the SourceForge.net
web site. The SourceForge project page for xCAT is:
<http://sourceforge.net/projects/xcat/>
http://sourceforge.net/projects/xcat/.
However, you may find it easier to go directly to:
<http://xcat.sf.net/xCAT2.0.pdf> http://xcat.sf.net/. On this page you can
get the "xCAT 2.0 AIX Cookbook" document and then go to the "Download xCAT
2.0" page to get the software. You need to download two tar files. The
prerequisite open source software is contained in the dep-aix.tar.gz file
and the xCAT software is contained in the core-aix.tar.gz file. These tar
files contain RPM packages that have been built to run on AIX. The Cookbook
describes how to install and use xCAT on AIX.
The initial alpha support provided by xCAT for AIX clusters includes the
following:
* A downloadable tar file containing the prerequisite Open Source
Software (OSS).
* A downloadable tar file containing the xCAT for AIX software.
* Scripts to automatically install the OSS and xCAT software.
* xCAT cluster data stored in a relational database. (SQLite software
is included in the OSS tar file.)
* Commands to manipulate the xCAT database tables directly.
* Commands to manage xCAT data object definitions.
* Hardware control commands for discovering hardware, gathering MAC
addresses, VPD, and environmentals, power control, initiating a network
boot, and LPAR creation/deletion.
* Initial support for converting xCAT definitions into AIX/NIM
definitions.
* Parallel remote shell and remote copy commands.
* Support for AIX 5.3 and higher releases.
* Support for POWER 5 and POWER 6 hardware.
* Notification infrastructure which lets users monitor xCAT database
table changes.
* "man" pages for xCAT commands.
Coming Soon
* xCAT service node support to improve scaling.
* Remote client access to the xCAT management node.
* Operating system image management support.
* Support for post-installation customization scripts.
* Support for AIX diskless/stateless nodes.
* Enhanced automation of NIM setup.
* Secondary adapter configuration support.
* Improved IBM HPC product integration.
The intent of this early (alpha) release for AIX is to give the xCAT user
community an idea of how AIX will be supported and to get some initial
feedback. Please let us know if you have any comments or issues etc.
Thanks,
Norm
